The AfricaTech Awards, presented by IFC and Viva Technology, are back for their second edition, shining a spotlight on tech entrepreneurs driving positive change across Africa. These awards recognize companies with innovative solutions addressing critical development challenges in climate change, health care, and financial inclusion.

Founders are encouraged to apply for the awards in three categories – climate tech, fintech, and health tech – from February 27 to March 12, 2023, via the awards’ website. Winners of the awards will gain access to industry leaders, top executives, and global investors, including IFC, a major venture capital investor in emerging markets.

Last year’s inaugural edition saw over 300 applicants. WEEE Centre won the award in the climate tech category, Click2Sure in fintech, and Chefaa in health tech.

AfricaTech Awards to recognize cutting-edge tech entrepreneurs

Tech entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in driving economic growth and promoting innovation in Africa. Despite record funding of $5.4 billion for African tech startups in 2022, there remains a significant gap compared to developed countries. Initiatives like the AfricaTech Awards aim to address this disparity by showcasing the continent’s dynamic tech sector and attracting more private investment.

Makhtar Diop, Managing Director of IFC, emphasizes the importance of tech entrepreneurship in addressing key challenges such as climate change and financial inclusion. With Africa’s tech ecosystems currently receiving just 1 percent of global VC funding, initiatives like the AfricaTech Awards are instrumental in unlocking the continent’s vast potential.

Viva Technology And The International Finance Corporation (IFC) Are Delighted To Announce The Launch

The 2024 AfricaTech Awards form part of IFC’s broader strategy to support tech ecosystems in emerging markets. Recent initiatives include a $225 million VC platform and the expansion of the IFC Startup Catalyst Program, aimed at nurturing early-stage startups and preparing them for later-stage investment.

The winners of the Award will be announced at Viva Technology 2024 in Paris, providing them with a platform to showcase their innovative solutions to a global audience of investors and tech executives. Shortlisted startups will undergo rigorous evaluation by Deloitte before presenting their ideas at Viva Technology.

Viva Technology Co-Presidents Maurice Lévy and Pierre Louette, along with Managing Director François Bitouzet, express their excitement for the second edition of the AfricaTech Awards. They highlight the event’s role in showcasing Africa’s tech ecosystem on an international stage, fostering collaboration, and driving innovation.
